Mon, 26 Aug 2024 00:00:00 +0200https://iconvillas.com/blog/post/click-click-cape-town-a-photographers-guide/Women Who Travelhttps://iconvillas.com/blog/post/women-who-travel/
Women who travel understand that it is about more than the destination, it is also about what we bring to the experience and what we make of it after we have landed back home. Alain de Botton explains this very eloquently in his book ‘The Art of Travel’. He says, “If our lives are dominated by a search for happiness, then perhaps few activities reveal as much about the dynamics of this quest–in all its ardour and paradoxes–than our travels.”

From solo backpackers to travel bloggers, entrepreneurs, and friends, women in travel are breaking boundaries and inspiring others to embark on their own journeys.

At True Luxury Villas we place incredible value on and care around the groups of women and solo women who book our high-end vacation rentals. It is women’s month in South Africa, and we would like to take the time to honour a few women who have pioneered and influenced travel with their courageous hearts and their spirit of adventure.

Women Leading Travel Businesses

Many successful travel businesses and blogs are run by women who are passionate about sharing their experiences and encouraging others to explore the world. Our own founder Therese Anderson being one such person who brings luxury villas in Cape Town within reach of the world. She understands the essence of travel and has a deep love for the travelling heart.

This article would not be complete without the mention Sussi Galley. As founder and Managing Director of Livingstone Safaris she invests heavily in her team’s knowledge, ensuring unforgettable, experiential itineraries that are based on first-hand experiences and a passion for sustainable travel.

Another example is Kate McCulley, known as Adventurous Kate, who has built a successful blog that offers travel advice and inspiration for solo female travellers. She makes it her life’s purpose to inspire and teach women how to travel safely. Then there is the heartwarming story of Cheryl Strayed, who built her public speaking business around her bestselling memoir ‘Wild’ (now a major motion picture).

Influencers and Digital Nomads

Social media has played a crucial role in amplifying the voices of female travellers. Influencers like Kiersten Rich, The Blonde Abroad, have millions of followers who tune in to see her latest adventures and travel tips. These influencers are not only showcasing beautiful destinations but also addressing important issues such as sustainable travel.

Overcoming Challenges & Inspirational Stories

Safety concerns, cultural barriers, and gender biases are some of the hurdles that female travellers may face. However, the community of women travellers is incredibly supportive, for your convenience we list a few resources at the end of this post.

There are plentiful examples of women who have overcome seemingly insurmountable challenges when it comes to exploration and travel. Think of South African Saray Khumalo, who became the first African woman to summit Mount Everest (2019) on her fourth try! Isabella Bird became the first woman to become part of the London's explorers club in 1892. And one of our favourite brave heart female stories must be that of French explorer Jeanne Baret. She refused to let her gender stop her from taking part in a worldwide journey on Louis Antoine de Bougainville's expedition around the world. She pretended to be a man to get onboard the ship and so became the first woman to circumnavigate the world between 1766 and 1769.

A lady who also opened the world of mountain exploring to women was Fanny Bullock Workman. Between 1903 and 1906 she proved that women are most definitely able to climb to the same altitudes as men. No lack of determination and courage here, we wonder what she would have made of our own Table Mountain.

Beverly Joubert is a South African wildlife photographer who, alongside her husband Dereck, has covered predator and animal behaviour resulting in 25 movies, 11 books, six scientific papers, several articles for the National Geographic magazine, as well as eight Emmy Awards nominations, a Peabody- and a World Ecology Award.

There is most definitely an art to travel. From the moment the anticipation starts building, to navigating the unforeseen, to being fully present in the moment. We travel so that we can come back, more whole, more fulfilled.

For women who travel, the future is bright, and adventure awaits. We salute you who choose to explore the world and share your experience; we salute you who contribute to a more inclusive and diverse travel landscape. We recognise the importance of catering to female travellers, and we take pride in helping you redefine the landscape and inspiring others to step out of their comfort zones to explore the world with an open heart and mind.

Wed, 07 Aug 2024 00:00:00 +0200https://iconvillas.com/blog/post/women-who-travel/The Art of Slow Travel: Embrace the Journeyhttps://iconvillas.com/blog/post/the-art-of-slow-travel-embrace-the-journey/
Slow travel is not just about reaching a destination; it's about gaining perspective and forging a deeper connection with yourself and your loved ones. This concept really resonates with us at True Luxury Villas. The whole aim of our existence and the why behind our business is to meet your every expectation, and beyond that – we want to show you how deliciously beautiful life can be.

In a world that often feels rushed and hectic, the concept of slow travel offers a refreshing and rewarding approach to exploring the world. Here’s a few reasons why we think you should embrace it too.

1. Deeper Cultural Immersion

Slow travel allows you to dive beneath the surface of a destination. Gone are the days of rushing and skimming through tourist attractions to take a quick photo. Claim your time to engage with local customs, traditions, and people. You can learn the local slang, participate in community events, and savour authentic cuisine. See our blog post on what our local cuisine has to offer here: Discover the Flavours of The Mother City

 Speak like a local.

2. Decompress. Less stress:

Rushing from one landmark to another can be exhausting and stressful. Slow travel promotes relaxation and mindfulness. Research before you leave and plan where you will spend your time, it is after all our most valuable asset. Think quality over quantity, appreciating the detail of things, leisurely strolls, unplanned detours, secret spots and adventure.

The True Luxury Villas team partners with several leading Cape Adventure and Touring companies to bring you a range of unforgettable experiences. For your planning purposes read more here: Escape Explore the Cape

 Walker Bay: Hermanus

3. Meaningful Connections

“Everyone returns us to a different sense of ourselves, for we become a little of who they think we are.”
― Alain de Botton

Embrace and let yourself be embraced by meaningful, genuine connections to others. Use travel as the vessel to foster relationships with loved ones and make memories that will sustain you to your dying day. Not only loved ones either, also make friends with the local shop owner, share a laugh with a local guide, chat to the flower seller. You will find that South Africans are among the friendliest people in the world. These interactions will serve to enrich your travel experience.

4. Personal Growth and Reflection

Slow travel encourages introspection and personal growth. Perhaps you enjoy traveling with people, perhaps you enjoy exploring on your own, whatever your preference, slow travel brings reflection and reflection brings perspective.

“The pleasure we derive from journeys is perhaps dependent more on the mindset with which we travel than on the destination we travel to.”
― Alain de Botton, The Art of Travel

Find beauty and magic in unexpected places and spaces. Cultivate a sense of gratitude and rediscover the joy of traveling. Become a part of the experience. There is a word in the Dictionary of Unexpected Sorrows that explains this well. That word is ‘Midding' - 'the tranquil pleasure of being near a gathering but not quite in it— hovering on the perimeter of a campfire, talking quietly outside a party, resting your eyes in the back seat of a car listening to friends chatting up front—feeling blissfully invisible yet still fully included, safe in the knowledge that everyone is together and everyone is okay, with all the thrill of being there without the burden of having to be’ – John Koenig.

Give yourself permission to enjoy a meaningful life.

We look forward to hosting you soon.

Southern Right Whales: These whales are the most frequently spotted during the season. Known for their distinctive callosities (rough patches of skin) on their heads, Southern Right Whales often come very close to shore, offering incredible viewing opportunities.

Humpback Whales: Famous for their acrobatic breaches and complex songs, Humpback Whales migrate along the coast and are often seen during the season. Though they are enormous, humpback whales are not predatory. They filter feed for tiny krill or small pelagic fishes and are totally harmless to people. These whales grow up to 60 feet (18.3 m) long and weigh around 80,000 pounds (36.3 metric tonnes). They live a graceful life and can grow as old as 90 years.

Whale Watching from the Cliff Paths of Hermanus

Bryde’s Whales (pronounced “broodus):

Named after a Norwegian, John Bryde, who, in 1912, helped construct the first modern South African whaling factory in the early 1900s, these great whales are over 40 tonnes of sheer awesomeness. They are more elusive and tend to stay further offshore, making them less common to spot.

Best Spots for Whale Watching

Hermanus: Often dubbed the "Whale Capital of the World," Hermanus is one of the best places to see whales. The town boasts a cliff path that offers excellent land-based viewing points. For a closer encounter, boat tours are available.

De Hoop Nature Reserve: This reserve offers stunning coastal trails and vantage points for whale watching. It’s a quieter spot compared to Hermanus, making it ideal for those seeking a more tranquil experience.

False Bay: Located near Cape Town, False Bay is another fantastic location for whale watching. The scenic drive along the coastline provides numerous spots to stop and enjoy the view.

Walker Bay: This area, encompassing Hermanus and Gansbaai, is another prime whale-watching destination. The bay's calm waters are a favourite playground for whales.

Where to Stay

Whale season falls within what we call the Secret Season in Cape Town. This is a time characterised by fewer crowds, cosy wine tastings and lush tranquil landscapes. The daytime weather is mild, ranging between 15°C (59°F) and 20°C (68°F), making it comfortable for outdoor activities. At nighttime the temperatures can drop to between 7°C (45°F) and 12°C (54°F). Still not as cold as most places during Winter. As this is also rainy season here, you can expect occasional showers, but also plenty of clear, crisp days.

It brings us joy to be able to recommend the following villas for your whale watching stay:

Hoy House: This villa has a tangible feel of grand expansiveness where one feels almost part of the scenic surrounds and at the same time it is intimate enough to support and soothe body and soul, creating moments of wonder and ponder. Hoy House can accommodate 8 guests.

Therese’s tips for Whale Watching

The team's favourite whale watching spot is Siever's Point - a cliff path in Hermanus with heavenly views in all directions.

Timing: Early mornings and late afternoons are often the best times for whale watching, as the ocean is usually calmer.

Equipment: Bring binoculars for a closer view and a good camera to capture the moments.

Clothing: Dress in layers, as the weather can change quickly along the coast.

Guided Tours: Consider joining a guided whale-watching tour for expert insights and the best chances of spotting whales.

Plan your trip, pack your binoculars, and get ready for an extraordinary adventure in the Western Cape. Happy whale watching!
Tue, 09 Jul 2024 00:00:00 +0200https://iconvillas.com/blog/post/where-giants-roam/Discover the Flavours of the Mother Cityhttps://iconvillas.com/blog/post/discover-the-flavors-of-the-mother-city/
1. Cape Malay Cuisine

Cape Malay cuisine is a cornerstone of Cape Town's food culture. Known for its aromatic spices and bold flavours, this cuisine originates from the Malay slaves brought to the Cape by Dutch settlers.

Must-Try Dish: Bobotie – A spiced meat dish baked with an egg-based topping, typically served with yellow rice and sambals.

Bobotie

2. Seafood

With the Atlantic Ocean on its doorstep, Cape Town is a seafood lover's paradise. From fresh oysters to line-caught fish, the city's seafood offerings are plentiful and delicious.

Must-Try Dish: Kingklip – A local fish that is often grilled or pan-fried to perfection.

3. Wine and Dine

Pairing local wines with gourmet dishes is a quintessential Cape Town experience. Cape Town is surrounded by some of the world's most renowned wine regions, such as Stellenbosch, Franschhoek, and Paarl. Allow expert sommeliers to guide you through the subtleties of pairing wines with different cuisines.

Must-Try Experience: Wine Tasting Tour – Spend a day exploring the vineyards tasting award-winning wines and building your collection.

Must-Try Dish: Biltong Salad by Chef Luke Dale-Roberts. Chef Luke uses thinly sliced gourmet biltong made from game meats like springbok or kudu with salad components such as microgreens, roasted butternut squash, and pickled red onions. This is served drizzled with a balsamic reduction and a touch of honey.

World Class Wine Tours

4. Street Food and Local Markets

For a more casual and eclectic food experience, Cape Town's street food and local markets are a must-visit. These venues showcase the city's vibrant food culture and offer a variety of tastes and textures.

Must-Try Dishes:

Truffle Polenta with Biltong. Creamy polenta is infused with truffle oil and topped with shaved biltong (dried cured meat). The dish is then garnished with a poached egg, crispy sage leaves, and a drizzle of truffle oil, adding layers of flavour and texture.

Ostrich Carpaccio: Thinly sliced, cured ostrich meat drizzled with truffle oil, sprinkled with microgreens, and topped with Parmesan shavings and a balsamic reduction.

Visit these food markets:

The Oranjezicht City Farm Market. Located at Granger Bay at the V&A Waterfront, this market is known for its fresh local produce and artisanal products, drink and eat with a view of the ocean and Table Mountain.

The Mojo Market. Located at Sea Point, this market combines food stalls with live music.

The Neighbourgoods Market. Located at The Old Biscuit Mill, Woodstock. Expect a wide array of gourmet food stalls, fresh produce, artisanal bread, cheeses, live music and more.

The Stellenbosch market, also known as the Root44 Market. Located at Audacia Wines, this market features an extensive array of gourmet food stalls offering everything from traditional South African dishes to international cuisine. It is set amidst vineyards and oak trees, providing a picturesque and relaxed setting.

5. Fusion and Contemporary Cuisine

Cape Town's culinary scene is constantly evolving, with innovative chefs blending traditional flavours with modern techniques to create unique dining experiences.

Must-Try Dish: Bunny Chow – Originally from Durban 9KZN Province), this hollowed-out bread filled with curry has found its way into Cape Town's fusion cuisine. Be sure to also try the deconstructed version by renowned Chef Reuben Riffel. Instead of a loaf, artisan bread rolls baked with herbs are used and the curry, made with premium ingredients, is served separately from the bread bowl, allowing diners to pour the curry into the bread themselves and thereby maintaining the crispiness of the bread.

Therese’s Restaurants & Eateries Recommendations:

La Colombe – this fine dining restaurant is located in the heart of Constantia and frequently finds itself in the top 10 list of S.Pellegrino’s World’s 50 Best Restaurants.

Elgr – located in Kloof Street in the city, this restaurant is where Chef Jesper Nilsson and Sommelier Le Roi van de Vyver work their magic.

Vrymansfontein – located in Paarl in the Cape Winelands and home to Chef Kevin Grobler.

Upper Union – located in a heritage building in Kloof Street where Chef Amori Burger will dazzle you with flavours.

6. Sweet Treats

No culinary guide to Cape Town would be complete without mentioning its delectable desserts and sweet treats.

Must-Try Dishes:

Koeksisters – A sticky, sweet doughnut-like treat that is deep-fried and soaked in syrup.

Melktert Milkshake: Inspired by the traditional South African milk tart, this is a sweet, creamy beverage. It is made with vanilla bean ice cream, cinnamon, and a hint of nutmeg, topped with whipped cream and a sprinkle of cinnamon sugar.

Koeksisters

7. Foraging

Foraging as a cuisine in the Western Cape is more than just a trend; it’s a way of life that celebrates the region’s natural beauty and ecological richness. Several local chefs and foraging experts offer guided foraging tours. This is an immersive and educational experience where you learn to search for, and collect wild food resources, such as plants, herbs, mushrooms, and shellfish, directly from nature.

The ingredients are then transformed into a seasonal, fresh and truly one-of-a-kind meal that reflects the terroir of the Western Cape

Cape Town's culinary landscape is as diverse and captivating as its natural beauty. The city's food scene offers local and international talent, promising an unforgettable experience. So, pack your appetite and get ready to embark on a culinary journey through the Mother City.

Bon appétit!

Fri, 21 Jun 2024 00:00:00 +0200https://iconvillas.com/blog/post/discover-the-flavors-of-the-mother-city/7 Reasons to Visit the Cape this Secret Seasonhttps://iconvillas.com/blog/post/7-reasons-to-visit-the-cape-this-secret-season/
1. Whale Watching Season

Of course this is number one on our list. The Secret Season coincides with the arrival of southern right whales along the coast. These magnificent creatures migrate to the South African coast to calve and nurse their young. Towns like Hermanus, Gansbaai, and the False Bay area offer some of the best whale watching in the world. Make use of either land-based or boat-based whale watching opportunities.

Besides whale watching, the winter months bring rich marine life closer to the shore. Cape Town’s waters teem with dolphins, seals, and even great white sharks. This makes it a great time for activities like cage diving, kayaking, and marine safaris.

Hint: Hoy House (insert link), available for booking through our website, is within walking distance of several coastal paths leading to whale watching vantage points.

2. Wine Harvest Season

If you are a wine connoisseur, you would want to tick a visit to a working wine farm off your list. Cape Town and surrounds boast some of the world’s best wine regions, including Stellenbosch, Franschhoek, and Paarl. July and August mark the end of the wine harvest season, offering visitors the chance to partake in wine tastings, vineyard tours, and various harvest festivals.

This is always a wonderful chance for our guests to be amongst the first to taste some of the new wines released and to build their collections and meet the winemakers.

3. Wildflower Season

Number three on our list is the wildflower season. Between August and September, the West Coast National Park, located a short drive from Cape Town, becomes a floral wonderland as wildflowers bloom in a spectacular display. This natural phenomenon attracts nature lovers and photographers from around the world.

Coupled with this, winter is our rainy season, transforming the Cape's landscape into a verdant paradise. The gardens, parks, and nature reserves are at their greenest and most vibrant, offering stunning scenery for hikes and outdoor activities. Be sure to visit the world-famous Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, a true haven of indigenous flora.

Fun fact: Established in 1913 and covering 528 hectares, the garden is part of the Cape Floral Kingdom, one of the world's six floral kingdoms and the smallest yet most diverse. Kirstenbosch showcases over 7,000 plant species, many of which are rare and endangered.

4. Fewer Crowds and Tranquil Atmosphere

Not many know about this secret season, and as a result Cape Town and its surrounding areas are much quieter compared to the bustling summer months. This means that you can explore popular attractions like Table Mountain, Robben Island, and the V&A Waterfront without the long lines and crowded spaces.

This also means that there are more opportunities to interact with locals and experience the authentic side of Cape Town and its surroundings. Whether it’s chatting with winemakers, artisans, or shop owners, the quieter season allows for more meaningful connections.

5. Mild Weather and Cosy Fireside Experiences

While it is winter in the Southern Hemisphere, Cape Town’s climate remains relatively mild compared to many other destinations. The weather is cooler and often interspersed with sunny days, making it comfortable for outdoor exploration without the intense heat of the summer months. In the evenings you may find yourself in the cosy atmosphere of one of our villas, enjoying a delicious meal or glass of wine in front of a roaring fire.

6. Cultural Events and Festivals

If cultural experiences are what attracts you, then Cape Town will not fail you. Several cultural events and festivals are on the calendar during this period. The annual Franschhoek Bastille Festival in July celebrates French heritage with food, wine, and festivities. The Cape Town International Kite Festival, usually held in October, is another highlight, offering colourful displays and family-friendly activities. Then there is the Franschhoek Literary Festival for book lovers and of course, the Good Food & Wine Show.

7. Indoor Markets, Museums and Galleries

Cape Town boasts a rich cultural scene with numerous museums and galleries, such as the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (MOCAA) and the District Six Museum. Indoor markets like the Old Biscuit Mill in Woodstock or the V&A Waterfront’s Watershed, are perfect for shopping for local crafts, gifts, art and wine to take back home. Here you can also enjoy delicious food while you listen to live music.

Imagine

Imagine hiking the iconic Table Mountain or exploring the lush Kirstenbosch Gardens with the added charm of clear, crisp air and vibrant winter blooms. Imagine yourself Indulging in world-class wines at cozy vineyard private tastings and imagine yourself experiencing the dramatic scenery of the Cape Peninsula in a serene, off-peak season.

Do more than imagine, make it happen. The Cape awaits you.

Did you know that in 2024 more voters than ever in history will head to the polls. At least 64 countries (a combined population of about 49% of the people in the world) will be partaking in national elections this year.

This week, 29 May, was that day for us, and as I stood in a queue longer than any I’ve ever seen before, I could not help but ponder what makes us humans exercise these rights. What is it that propels us forward to get up in any weather and queue with fellow strangers to stand for the inalienable right to cast a vote, the results of which will have a very real impact on our collective future. As I listened to conversations and opinions of people I will probably never know personally, but with whom I shared this experience, I had a moment where I realized that I was busy imprinting a memory on my heart and brain. A memory that I will cherish and perhaps share with my grandchildren one day. It was late afternoon and the sun shone through the most stunning clouds over Table Mountain. I stepped out of the queue for a second to take a photo.

Of course, I had time to read and research and found that there is even a term for this acute awareness that a moment one is experiencing is in the process of being laid down as a memory. That term is dès vu and it is beautifully described in the dictionary of obscure sorrows by John Koenig. I urge you to watch this impactful short clip: www.thedictionaryofobscuresorrows.com/concept/des-vu

At the end of the day and at the end of one’s life, when all else is stripped away, our memories are what we are. It is what makes us. It is what captures the rich and deep dimensions of experience. It is how we share what we hold dear and how we communicate our values. Life really is a great and total miracle to be met with an open heart and with a resounding yes. It is here for us to experience to the full, to educate, to inform and to fill our memory banks.

D. H. Lawrence said, “The vast marvel is to be alive… The supreme triumph is to be most vividly, most perfectly alive”. Think back on all your life’s travels. Find and hold those moments where time almost stood still for you with the awareness, the inner knowing, that a memory was being made. I hope you can recall many of these bittersweet moments. Bittersweet because we know that they will pass, as we also know that they will continue to exist for us long after, continuing to affirm our joy. A memory of a place visited will forever anchor you to that place and the people you experienced it with.

The value of a memory will not decrease over time
While the value of physical things like cars, houses and jewelry often decreases over time, the value of a memory keeps going up. It is, in fact, invaluable. Consider also that things (again, cars, houses, jewelry) are compared while experiences are shared. When we experience a breathtaking view, a cultural site, or a challenging adventure, it bonds us together. We don’t fall into a paradigm of who has more or better, we fall into what unites us.

Our wish for all this year is that you exercise your right to freedom, your right to experience life to the full and your birthright to make joyful memories.

With love

Travel and Digital Amnesia

When last did you watch something unfold from behind the lens of your smartphone while traveling? How engaged were you? Were you truly living the experience?
Our smartphones have become an integral part of our travelling. We use it to research our destinations, to take photos, to find restaurants, to get and give feedback, and so much more. But now experts are warning that over-reliance on these devices can lead to digital amnesia, causing us to forget much of our trips after as little as two weeks.

Figure 2: Villa stays bring full immersion with all your senses.

Sensory experiences are the sorts of experiences we have when we see, hear, touch, smell, or taste something and it is only when we really engage with our travel experiences through all our senses that we can process and lay down this stimulating information in the form of memories. The Oxford Academic tells us that these sensory experiences provide topics both for the theory of knowledge and the philosophy of mind. It is quite literally how we learn. We are sure that, as a fellow hodophile (someone who loves to travel), you will agree that no other experience provides one with a richer multitude of sensory opportunities as travelling does. In the words of Mark Twain: “One must travel to learn.”

“One must travel to learn” – Mark Twain

This week we invite you to focus your full attention on North. This Villa sits perched on the slopes of Signal Hill with panoramic views of the Indian Ocean. As you step into this tranquil space, you can’t be anything but fully engaged. What you see, what you hear and what you smell, all to be stored as lasting memories. This is where you come home to yourself. This is where you fall into a gentler, slower pace with a sense of grace and gratitude.

Our personal histories define who we are on a deep personal level. Your travels are more than just interesting stories to be shared at dinner parties; it forms a fundamental part of your very being, the essence of who you are. These moments weave the rich tapestry that makes your life uniquely yours.

Abundance literally means "more than enough", and it doesn’t only need to imply fortune and riches.
At this time of year, let's step back and take stock of what we need to fill our tank going forward into a new year. To focus on what brings lasting joy. The privilege of being able to give without expecting something in return; allowing abundance to bring appreciation.

Thank you to all our friends, family, clients, trade partners and suppliers for your support, sustenance, encouragement, collaboration and wisdom this past year. We love and appreciate you.

Mon, 18 Dec 2023 00:00:00 +0200https://iconvillas.com/blog/post/abundantly-grateful-2/Multi-Generational Travel - Why A Villa Stay Ticks All The Boxeshttps://iconvillas.com/blog/post/harmonious-havens-for-family-centric-travel-2/
When planning this special journey, the choice of accommodation plays a pivotal role in ensuring comfort, privacy, and space for everyone involved. Luxury villas, with their generous amenities and spacious layouts, is the ideal choice for multi-generational family travel.

We’ve rounded up some great reasons to consider your next holiday as a family-centric one:

Exclusivity

One of the most significant advantages of staying in a luxury villa for multi-generational travel is the abundant space and privacy it offers. Villas typically come with multiple bedrooms, living areas, kitchens, private gardens or pools and even a private chef (on request). This means that each generation of the family can have their own space to relax and unwind, making it easier to maintain individual routines while still enjoying quality time together.

Your Private Sanctuary

Luxury villas are designed to provide all the comforts of home, and so much more. They come armed with fully equipped kitchens, sumptuous living rooms, and expansive dining and outdoor relaxation areas where everyone has a space to call their own. Amenities extend beyond the 'normal' - towels are extra fluffy, the bed is super comfortable, your fridge can be stocked prior to arrival with all your favourite foods, and a good cup of coffee or glass of chilled Chardonnay are on hand.

Flexibility

Multi-generational trips often involve different age groups with varying interests and energy levels. Staying in a villa allows each family member to follow their own schedule. Grandparents can enjoy leisurely mornings, parents can explore local attractions, and children can play by the pool, in the garden or explore the outdoors in a safe environment. This flexibility is especially valuable when accommodating nap times, early bedtimes, or late risers.

Fostering Togetherness

Luxury villas provide a comfortable and intimate setting for family bonding. Whether it's gathering around the dining table for a home-cooked meal, lounging by the pool, or simply sharing stories in the living room, villas encourage quality time and meaningful connections among generations.

Bells and Whistles

Luxury villas offer exclusive features such as private swimming pools, hot tubs, home theatres, game rooms, and even spa facilities. These extra perks can make the vacation even more enjoyable for everyone, offering entertainment options that cater to different age groups.

Here we are, almost halfway through December and I still find myself thinking we are somewhere in July… how fast this year has flown, and how quickly we have all needed to adjust!

In spite of this spinning sensation, I believe that now more than ever it is vital to take some quiet time out each day, to count our blessings and be grateful for everything we have.

Be. Such an understated, often overlooked word. To be… fully present, in each precious moment.

That is my new year's resolution. Starting today. God’s mercies are new each day, and each day we are given the opportunity to begin again. What could be more promising or powerful than that?

I am eternally grateful that we are able to travel, explore and experience new things once again; for our amazing team; for good health, a loving family and caring friends; for work I love, and to wake up each morning in this beautiful country we get to call home.

So here's a cheers to new beginnings! May you and your loved ones be blessed this festive season, and may we all learn to celebrate each precious moment together.

With warm villa regards,

A singularly beautiful city crowned by the magnificent natural wonder of Table Mountain. Perched between the ocean and the mountain, and with a national park as its heart, the Mother City offers a plethora of activities and sightseeing options. We have highlighted only 10 of the most iconic things to see and do here.

TABLE MOUNTAIN

It’s no wonder people travel far and wide to admire and explore this exquisite landmark.

For those with an adventurous streak, actively explore this magnificent mountain on one of the many hiking trails, hop on a mountain bike for something more fast-paced or (for the really daring) allow Table Mountain to challenge you to some rock climbing. Fear not though laid-back travellers, as you can also explore this rock by means of a rotating cableway, which will swoop you to the summit in a matter of minutes.

However you choose to get to the top, be sure to capture your experience on camera and don’t forget to indulge in some delicious South African dishes at the Table Mountain Café, with a glass of bubbly of course.

I’LL CHEERS TO THAT

Summer is just around the corner for us Capetonians, which means days are getting longer, giving us reason to see the warmer days off at a delightful rooftop bar, a beautiful beach or a vibey gin/wine bar. Live it up like the locals at some firm favourites; The Grand Café & Beach, Gorgeous George rooftop bar, Chinchilla, Tjing Tjing, The Secret Gin Bar or Piano Bar. Feeling the energy of the city take hold? Allow the city lights to guide you from bar-to-bar for a fantastically festive journey that can be experienced during the day, or night-time.

GOOD ENOUGH TO EAT

We fully intend to toot our own horn, because Cape Town’s food scene is off the charts. Allow the city to take you on a culinary journey from Italian and French inspired dishes to Mexican and Asian; there is something for everyone. #willtravelforfood is a motto that we live by and we’re sure that Cape Town will steal your heart (or should we say taste buds) as you savour all of the unique flavours.

Our picks for fine dining: Chef’s Warehouse at Beau Constantia, La Colombe and the Potluck Club. For something more casual: Caprice, Shio, Kloof Street House, Café Paradiso, The Lawns.

HALALA PROMENADE

‘The prom” as locals call it, is an adored walkway with an impressive sea view stretching along the Atlantic Seaboard that can easily be accessed from most of our villas. An absolute must is a leisurely sunrise walk along the prom with a cup of coffee in hand to admire the sight and sound of the ocean. We suggest making the most of it by also enjoying the prom in the evening as Cape Town shows off one of its marvellous sunsets that is sure to soothe your soul. Constantly abuzz, the prom is home to a children’s play area, a dog park, food and ice cream trucks, a putt-putt course and even an outdoor gym.

MARKETING AROUND CAPE TOWN

Farmer’s markets continue to trend in the city with vibrant scenes, exceptional food and frequently live music to serenade you as you walk around the stalls. Sultry spices, roasted coffee, fresh cut flowers, freshly baked bread … The scents of the market mix in the air and create an atmosphere of tempting delights. Spoiled for choice no matter what time of day (or night). Not sure which market is right for you? Let us help with more details on our personal favourites.

ORANJEZICHT MARKET
Saturdays, 9am – 2pm & Sundays, 9am – 3pm
Granger Bay Boulevard, Granger Bay, V&A Waterfront, Cape Town

It is said that us Cape Tonians are creatures of habit wherein we find a sensational restaurant and make it our local haunt, or happen across a fabulous smoothie and never trial the vast array that remains on the menu … The Oranjezicht Market is the perfect example. We visited here when it first opened its doors, many moons ago, revealing an organic haven of earth-grown delights, and we never left…

Arriving in the early hours of the morning after a walk along the celebrated Sea Point Promenade, the oceanic view is cast in a golden glow as you sip on a nourishing cold pressed juice. Step from stall to stall as heady aromas fill the air with spicy curries, crispy baked breads and freshly ground coffee. There are some devilishly sinful treats to be had as well.

The day unwinds through a selection of favourite local dishes and artisanal fare, and before long, the bell rings announcing the final sales of the day. Gather a basket of nutritious ingredients before you go to enjoy in the privacy of your True Luxury Villa together. Forgot something you needed? Thankfully, they have now opened their doors on Sundays as well (trust us, one day just isn’t enough!).

STAY AT: North or Bay Vista
ENQUIRE: [email protected]

BLUE BIRD MARKET
Fridays, 4pm – 10pm & Sundays, 11am – 4pm
39 Albertyn Rd, Muizenberg, Cape Town

Slow down and move gently into your weekend beginning with a Friday feast at the cosy Blue Bird Market. Found in an area characterised by inspirational murals on the walls and surfers strolling the sidewalk after their sunset surf, we have a local-love for this one.

Just before stepping in, the friendly buzz of chatter tingles through the air complimented by the slow drum beats of the band. Sip on the most spectacularly fermented Kombucha that dances across the palette. Indulge in an Asian or South American-inspired culinary adventure. There’s little bit of something for everyone including flat breads filled with a kaleidoscope of toppings and blossoming flowers so bright they would illuminate even the cloudiest of days.

Fridays are truly festive. If you feel like a slow day around sandy Muizenberg, walk straight out of the crashing waves after a refreshing Sunday surf into this welcoming atmosphere.

STAY AT: Chic Views Studio
ENQUIRE: [email protected]

MOJO MARKET
Mondays – Sundays, 8am – 11pm
30 Regent Road, Sea Point, Cape Town

Begin your journey to the Mojo Market admiring the sunset on a cool evening as you walk swiftly along the Sea Point Promenade. If you feel like a quick swim before your visit, find yourself wiggling the sand between your toes and taking a crisp dip in the Atlantic just a few steps away.
Browse the exquisite range of hand-picked antiques, jewellery, homeware, leather goods and a variety of other delicately precious things. Since you’re in the valley where some of the most devine wines, cheeses, charcuterie products and olive oils are made, taste your way through it, and maybe take a little bit of the Root44 Market home with you…

A true Icon experience, there is also an oyster and bubbly bar – because any time of day is perfectly suited for a glass of bubbles…

HOT TIP: With markets trending hard in and around Cape Town, finding a spot to sit can be a challenge. At Root44, there is ALWAYS seating available and a lot of shade as well.

With the Zeitz MOCAA & Norval Foundation bursting onto the scene, the two, leading 20th-century South African art museums are creating a serious culture buzz. Here’s a guide on how to cure your cultural curiosity, both indoors and outdoors.

ART CULTURE

ZEITZ MOCAA: V&A Waterfront
Open Wednesday – Monday, Closed Tuesdays

“Zeitz MOCAA collects, preserves, researches, and exhibits twenty-first century art from Africa and its Diaspora”

Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (Zeitz MOCAA) is a public not-for-profit contemporary art museum that collects, preserves, researches and exhibits 21st-century art from Africa and its Diaspora; hosts international exhibitions; develops supporting educational and enrichment programmes; encourages intercultural understanding; and guarantees access for all.

More than one hundred galleries, spread over nine floors, are dedicated to a large cutting-edge permanent collection; temporary exhibitions; and Centres for Art Education, Curatorial Excellence, Performative Practice, Photography, the Moving Image, and the Costume Institute.

Not only is the museum a spectacle to see, but it is housed in a historical landmark – the old grain silo. The silos were built in 1921 and the architects were tasked with designing a building that remained true to its old industrial structure. Before you even enter the museum, you find yourself marvelling at this work of art.

Where to stay: Palmkloof Penthouse

THE NORVAL FOUNDATION: Tokai
Open Wednesday – Monday, Closed Tuesdays

“This is our time, the world is awakening to Africa, the art is our voice. May this inspire many people.”

The new centre created for research into – and will be a research and exhibition space for – 20th and 21st-century artworks from one of Africa’s most extensive art collections.

Adjacent to Table Mountain National Park, the Norval Foundation offers visitors a multi-sensory experience combining the experience of art with an appreciation for nature in world-class facilities including a sculpture garden, outdoor amphitheatre, purpose built exhibition spaces, and research library, a restaurant and bar, a shop and a children’s playground.

Guided by director Elana Brundyn and her team of expert curators, the Norval Foundation aims to create high quality exhibitions and public programming as the custodians of the Gerard Sekoto Foundation, Edoardo Villa Estate Collection, the Alexis Preller Archive and contemporary art collections.

Where to stay: The Orchard

THEATRICAL CULTURE

Theatre is an important part of Cape Town’s culture. There are many theatres from to choose, each with a unique personality, so we have hand-picked three of our favourites to help!

THE FUGARD THEATRE: District Six

Located in historical District Six, you will find The Fugard Theatre. Named after Athol Fugard, South Africa’s most notable playwright, novelist, actor and director, this theatre is as dramatic as its namesake featuring two classic-style theatres and a bioscope. Some of South Africa’s most notable performances are showcased here, usually to sold-out crowds who gather before each show to enjoy the vintage atmosphere, bar and cup of warming coffee.

Where to stay: Villa Leeuwenhof

ALEXANDER UPSTAIRS: City Center

Alexander Upstairs is an intimate performance space found over a trendy local hotspot, Alexander Bar. Following the wooden staircase upstairs to the intimate theatre, you would never know there was a competitive game of pub quiz going on downstairs. The performances are shorter than most and may be available for only a night to a couple of weeks. Guests enjoy a dynamic range of styles and genres with every from drama and comedy to cabaret, jazz, acoustic sessions, readings and more. Dive head first into this exciting world.

Where to stay: Jade d’Luca

THE SOUND OF MUSIC: City Center
Artscape | 6 – 27 May 2018

“Amazing; a triumph; a must-see; definitely one of my favourite things; a production that enchants yet another generation”

The most anticipated theatrical event of the season and one of the worlds most loved musicals, The Sound of Music returns to South African shores this year. The show opened in London in 1961 and is the longest-running American musical of its generation. Even today, The Sound of Music remains the most successful movie musical in history. This internationally proclaimed performance with an all South African cast is a ‘must see’ for every member of the family, young and old!

LOCAL FOOD CULTURE

4ROOMED CULTURE: Khayelitsha
Fridays – Sundays | Lunch and Dinner

4Roomed eKasi Culture is a lifestyle concept based on the four roomed homes found in the oldest townships of South Africa. A meal here evokes a sense of nostalgia rooted in the concept of ‘Ubuntu’, to embrace compassion and humanity. An inclusive hub for all who live and visit South Africa, 4Roomed eKasi can be found throughout the city with their food truck, but for a truly immersive local food experience, visit their pop-up restaurant in Khayelitsha.

Here, nostalgic moments of traditional African values are evoked through food, style and décor. Not only is the food delicious, but they have also created an important initiative to encourage healthy eating in the Townships.

Cape Town has a strong outdoor culture with trails rated as one of the top activities. Get outside this winter for a breath of fresh air at Newlands Forest. The trails here offer walkers, runners and joggers a variety of paths from which to choose ranging from easy and flat, to longer, more challenging routes. Along the way, be sure sure to pay attention to the forest around you, for it holds many secrets.

Over the next few weeks, we will be taking full advantage of some Q.T. with the hot sunshine – and with so much happening in the Cape, we struggled to find our Top Tips to capture the last rays of summer – but we would never let you down:

From days spent crawling craft breweries and lunches on Signal Hill, to wineries, pubs, great restaurants, hikes, sunny beach days and community interactions – your three homegrown hosts will show you what it means to live like all kinds of locals.

Perfect for: Solo guests in the city looking to make friends, couples wanting to understand the lay of the land or families looking for something different to satisfy all age requirements in an excursion.

SCENIC CYCLING ROUTES

Head out from Camps Bay to Hout Bay – the route takes in stunning views of Camps Bay and Clifton beaches, as well as Lion’s Head all the way into Hout Bay. This is one of the most stunning coastal routes in the world – and that’s a fact. It’s also relatively flat, which is great for relaxed riders. Once you have reached the first set of traffic lights, you can turn around there OR If you’re feeling brave, carry on past Hout Bay to Chapmans Peak Drive.

Continue further onto Cape Point National Park where you might get completely side-tracked and end up doing more sight-seeing than cycling. Find Cape mountain zebra, bontebok and eland as well as a plethora of fauna and flora along the way. This is a fairly easy-riding route with lots to do and see along the way.

Perfect for: Active guests looking for a bit of adventure and those who suffer from FOHMO – Fear Of Having Missed Out – on experiencing a piece of the Cape Town Cycle Tour.

Here’s our roundup of where the locals and their kiddies hang out.

Art Jamming

Have a little Picasso, Pollock or Michelangelo in the making? Or perhaps your child just loves to get dirty while having a little fun (what child doesn’t?). Whatever it may be, Art Jamming is where kids can make a big splash as their imaginations run wild – without mom or dad being left to clean up afterwards.

Art Jamming provides disposable aprons, canvases (a whopping 12 different sizes to choose from), easels, paintbrushes and an array of non-toxic acrylic paints that kids can use to freely express themselves. But it’s not just reserved for the little ones; parents can join in the fun too (no drawing or painting skills are needed; just a desire to have fun while getting colourfully messy).

Art Jamming is located in The V&A Waterfront (above Toy Kingdom on the Breakwater side). No reservations required. Simply walk in, buy your canvas and let the creative juices flow.

Deer Park Café

Located in the lush, forestry slopes of Table Mountain, Deer Park Café is a go-to spot for moms and dads with small kids. Not only does this cafe offer awe-inspiring views of Cape Town’s City Bowl and the distant Atlantic Ocean, but also a great outdoor play area with swings and jungle gyms for kids to burn off energy (there’s outside seating near the play area) and a deliciously warm fireplace for those chilly winter days. Did we mention that their menu changes seasonally and offers delicious treats and drinks for young and old (we hear their apple crumble and freshly squeezed veggie juices are a must-try)?

The café is also an easy gateway into Deer Park, a nature reserve that’s popular with local families for walks, hikes and even picnics.

Deer Park Café can get bustling over weekends, so please ensure you book a table before arriving. Call +2721-462-6311 to reserve your spot.

The Company’s Gardens

The Company’s Garden is to Capetonians what Central Park is to New Yorkers. This botanical garden and heritage site, located in the heart of the city, dates back to 1650 when the first settlers to Cape Town used it to grow fresh produce to replenish ships that came past the coast on their way to Europe and Asia.

Today, it’s home to some of South Africa’s oldest vegetation and trees, as well as a rose garden, Japanese garden, veggie garden, an aviary, fishpond and hundreds of inquisitive squirrels (these bright eyed and bushy-tailed animals will happily eat nuts from your hands; nuts can be bought at vendors throughout the garden).

Don’t forgo a stop at The Company’s Garden Restaurant. It has a great play area with oversized bird-like nests thats children can climb into and hang out in, a huge swing that the whole family can rock in, and oversized chessboard to enjoy a game of chess. Their menu also features contemporary meals with traditional Cape dishes like a Bobotie Roti (curried mince served in a wrap).

The Company’s Garden Restaurant doesn’t take bookings, and makes for an ideal spur-of-the-moment pitstop. The Company’s Garden, itself, is open daily from 7am to 7pm.

Two Oceans Aquarium

At the epicentre where the Indian and Atlantic Oceans meet, lies one of Cape Town’s most popular child-friendly establishments (and one of the world’s top aquariums): The Two Oceans Aquarium. Every day young and old, big and small, local and foreign flock here to look at, learn about and explore the numerous precious sea life that calls this place home. Highlights include translucent jellyfish, stingrays, turtles, tiny and rare seahorses, giant spider crabs, the Cape Fur Seal and anemone fish (you know, Nemo in Finding Nemo?).

Make sure your visit coincides with one of the aquarium’s feeding sessions – usually between 12pm and 2pm – where you can watch turtles, stingrays, giant guitar fish and even penguins enjoy a delicious lunch.

For those who really want to get up close and personal, the aquarium offers a scuba-diving experience where visitors can swim with their rays, turtles and more. No stress if you’re an inexperienced, unqualified diver; you can complete the aquarium’s one-day ‘Discover Scuba’ diving course that will allow you to do one dive. Unfortunately the scuba-diving experience (including the ‘Discover Scuba’ diving course) is only open to children over the age of 12.

Two Oceans Aquarium is open 365 days a year from 9:30am to 6:00pm.

Café Paradiso

This warm, family-friendly restaurant, located in trendy Kloof Street, is literally every Capetonian parents’ saving grace when it gets to dining out with kids. Here kids are invited to partake in their own cooking experiences as they make their own pizza, bake their own cookies or gingerbread man, and/or ice a cupcake for dessert – all while parents enjoy a glass of vino and superb Italian fare without any disruption.

Not only is Café Paradiso’s staff excellent with kids, but the bakery where kids partake in the cooking experience are in eye-shot distance to the tables in the restaurant – so parents can keep an eye on their little ones during their gastronomy experience.

The bakery where the kids experience takes place is open daily from 9:00am to 8:00pm and can only serve between one and six children at a time. Cafe Paradiso’s restaurant, however, is open from 9:00am to 10:pm. Booking for both the restaurant and kids experience is essential. Please call +2721-422-0403 to make a reservation.

Boulders Beach

Just 40 minutes from Cape Town’s City Centre, lie the soft sand and turquoise coloured waters of Boulders Beach. This little stretch of coast is also home to an impressive colony of African penguins – an endangered species of penguins most famous for their distinctive braying as well as for being the only penguins on the African continent.

The beach also falls under the Table Mountain National Park Marine Protected areas, and comes with a small entrance fee that goes towards conservation of the area. This ultimately means that the beach is rarely crowded, so the kids can play in the magnificent rock pools to their heart’s content. Plus the beaches large boulders offers great protection from winds and waves.

Boulders Beach is open seven days a week and can be accessed from 08h00 to 17h00.

Strawberry Picking at Mooiberge Farm

Nestled in the heart of Cape Town’s glorious winelands lies one of South Africa’s finest and oldest strawberry farms: Mooiberge Farm. Every year between October until December, local families make their way here for a day frolicking through the fields with baskets in which they can reap their own strawberry – which, of course, they get to take home.

The farm is also loved by little ones for their amusing scarecrows which are scattered around the farm.

Out of season, the farm’s ever-popular farm stall sees locals stocking up on nuts, dried fruit and tasty sweet treats.

Mooiberge Farm is only open on weekends and public holidays from 09h30 to 16h30. Strawberry picking is only open from October to December; however, during South Africa’s summer school holidays in December, strawberry picking is open daily. Please contact +2721-881-3222 closer to your visit to check their schedule.

Giraffe House

Giraffe House might be one of Cape Town’s newest family attractions (it’s only been open for five years), but its certainly grown to be one of its most popular – mainly because it provides families with the perfect opportunity to experience the great outdoors while learning about animals and conservation. In fact, Giraffe House is actually a wildlife awareness centre and works on a dedicated conservation programme.

This farm’s tallest attraction, naturally, is their much-loved giraffe called Gerry. But there are also a number of other special animals to learn about, including the smallest antelope in the world (the blue duiker), the largest antelope (the eland), the largest reptile in the world (the Nile crocodile), an aardvark and meerkats.

There’s no restaurant on the farm and families are, instead, encourage to pack a picnic basket and to make it an all day affair.

Giraffe House is open from Monday to Sunday from 09h00 to 17h00 and no booking is required for groups of under 12 people.

Cool Runnings

Traditionally – if you’re familiar with the 90s cult film Cool Runnings and/or a fan of winter sports – bob-sleighing or tobogganing happens on snow and ice. Here, in Cape Town, it runs on a steel track and takes place under warm skies, and is the perfect antidote for little daredevils.

Each toboggan at Cool Runnings can seat up to two people, and follows a track down a path way that has 17 corners, S-bends and a tunnel. Moms will be glad to know that the speed of the toboggan can be controlled by means of a break, and that the sled automatically slows down as it reaches the docking station.

And it’s suitable fun for everyone: kids over the age of eight are allowed to slide down alone, while kids under the age of eight need to be accompanied by an adult in the two-seater toboggan.

Cool Runnings is open Monday to Friday from 11h00 to 18h00pm and weekends from 09h00 to 18h00pm. Please note that for safety reasons it closes on days when it rains.

Vergenoegd Wine Estate

Visiting Cape Town’s beautiful winelands with kids can sometimes feel more like punishment than pleasure for parents. That’s until you’ve visited Vergenoegd Wine Estate. This farm is a fantastic family destination where kids can be entertained with a number of outdoor games, giant chalkboards and even cookie decoration, while mom and dad enjoy some fine wines and delicious food (Vergenoegd Wine Estate is renowned with locals for their delicious picnic baskets which can be enjoyed under the old oak trees on the farm’s well manicured lawns).

The main attraction, however, is the farm’s amusing daily Duck Parades where hundreds of Indian Runner Ducks line up to make their hasty way to patrol the vineyards. This parade forms part of the farm’s biodiversity and pest-control programmes – the waddling workforce can consume a startling amount of snails and bugs during their time in the vineyards. It’s vastly entertaining and a must-see while in Cape Town.

Vergenoegd Wine Estate is open daily from 08h00 to 17h00. Picnics baskets are also available daily, but needs to be booked in advance. Duck Parades takes place Monday to Friday at 12h30 and 15h30 and on Saturday, Sundays and Public Holidays at 10h00, 12h30 and 15h30. Booking to join the Duck Parade is also essential. Please contact +2721-843-3248 to reserve a picnic spot and to join the Duck Parade.

Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden

Last but certainly not least is Cape Town’s favourite parks: Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens. It’s not without reason that it’s called the ‘most beautiful garden in Africa’ and that it’s as loved by the locals as it is by the number of tourists who visit every day.

Pack a picnic basket and let your kids run wild on one of the vast lawns. Or meander through the garden before enjoying lunch at Moyo restaurant, an African-inspired restaurant where the entire family can enjoy traditional African face painting.

Don’t leave without visiting the Boomslang (means “tree snake”) – a canopy walkway that winds and dips through and over the trees in the garden.

Kirstenbosch is open 7 days a week; from September to March (summer season): 08h00 to 19h00; April to August (winter season): 08h00 to 18h00.

So, move on over San Sebastián, Tokyo, Melbourne and New Orleans…

Yet, with so many great dining options, where are you likely to find locals enjoy their best meals? Check out our list below.

BREAKFASTS AND BRUNCH

Hemelhuijs

Everything about this quaint café in the heart of Cape Town is heavenly (Hemelhuijs loosely translate from Afrikaans-Dutch to “heavenly home”) – from its décor to its food and service. Chef-proprietor Jacques Erasmus also pays homage to his traditional Northern Cape upbringing with his delicious dishes, such as Mosbolletjie bread (a traditional Afrikaans type of bread with aniseeds), cinnamon dumplings and smoor (tomato relish). Breakfast is also served all day and each meal is served on the most exquisite crockery (which you can also purchase at the restaurant).

Hemelhuijs is open for breakfast and lunch from Monday to Friday from 9am to 4pm and Saturdays from 9am to 3pm. Booking is essential as Hemelhuijs can fill up quickly. Contact them at +2721-418-2042 to make your reservation.

Bacon on Bree

Only in a city that loves food as much as Cape Town does will you find an entire restaurant dedicated to one delicious ingredient: bacon! The menu, luckily, offers a variety of dishes where the hero (bacon) stands out. Their Hairy Biker breakfast (Mexican beans with chorizo sausage, fried egg and bacon) is a favourite with locals, and so is the Harvey Spector sandwich (bacon, brie, tomato and pesto on fresh ciabatta). The restaurant isn’t just loved by local for its bacon – the quirky descriptions on the menu are another reason why locals keep returning.

Bacon on Bree is open for for breakfast and lunch from Monday to Friday from 7:30am to 5pm and Saturdays and Sundays from 8:30am to 3pm. No reservations accepted; tables provided on a first come, first serve basis.

Jason Bakery

This is by far the most popular bakery in Cape Town, and for good reason: it takes just one bite from owner and pastry chef Jason Lilley’s famed bacon croissants, pies, pain au chocolate, sourdough with scrambled eggs or chorizo egg cups to understand why. Throw in their delicious coffees, and it’ll explain why there’s always a crowd waiting to be served.

But it’s Saturday mornings at Jason Bakery that’s the real highlight for Capetonian, when Jason’s famous Doughssants are on sale. These scrumptious pastries are a delicious hybrid of croissants and doughnuts, and each week it’s served with a fresh, new and exciting flavour and filling.

If the crowds aren’t your cup of coffee, head on over to the Loop Street for Bardough By Jason – it’s the same concept by the same owner, but with a few different offerings (note that the Doussants are only available from the Jason Bakery on Bree Street).

Jason Bakery on Bree Street is open Monday to Friday from 7am until 3:30pm and Saturdays from 8am to 2pm. Bardough by Jason is open Monday to Thursdays from 7am to 3:30pm; Fridays from 7am to 9pm and Saturdays 8am to 5pm; it also re-opens on Tuesdays from 5pm to 9pm. No reservations accepted; tables provided on a first come, first serve basis.

LUNCH

Royale Eatery

This quirky restaurant at the top end of Cape Town’s famous Long Street is an institution with locals, and was even named as one of the world’s top 10 best burger places by the Telegraph in 2015. And here’s why: the menu offers a choice of 50 gourmet burgers (including a wide variety of vegetarian and vegan options), which is served with their famous fries, sweet-potato fries or salad. Do as the locals do and order half salad and half fries or half fries and half sweet-potato fries with your burger. Their Classic Royale is exactly what it says: a classic; while their El Burro (it features chorizo and chilli) is hot stuff.

What goes well with burgers? Yes, milkshakes! And the selection at Royale Eatery won’t disappoint – their Jack Daniel’s and Peanut Butter one is simply yummy!

Royale Eatery is open Monday to Saturdays for lunch and dinner from 12pm to 11:30pm. The restaurant has a walk-in section on the ground floor for those who decide on the whim to grab a bit to eat here, while those who reserve a table is seated upstairs. For bookings, please contact Royale Eatery at +2721-422-4536.

Chef’s Warehouse and Canteen

If you read our blog last month you may remember our write up about local chef Liam Tomlin’s Chef’s Warehouse restaurant at Beau Constantia. This month, however, we want to tell you about Liam’s original Chef’s Warehouse on Bree Street. Locals and visitors flock here every day for the the best tapas in town – the Tapas For 2 that consists out of the eight dishes literally have the local’s tongues wagging. We also love that the menu changes every day, ensuring that dishes are fresh, seasonal and exciting.

Avid cooks (amateur or trained) will also be enamoured by the selection of cooking products and recipe books that Chef’s Warehouse’s sells.

Chef’s Warehouse is open Monday to Fridays for breakfast, lunch and early dinner from 9am until 8pm and on Saturdays for breakfast and lunch from 9am to 2:30pm. No reservations accepted; tables provided on a first come, first serve basis.

El Taqueria

Street style food is all the rage in Cape Town at the moment. Luckily, locals will tell you they prefer this kind of dining inside a restaurant instead of on the sidewalk. They will also tell you that El Taqueria, a taco bar in Cape Town’s hip Tamboerskloof area, is one of the best places to do so – its authentic Mexican fare is full of flavour and sees locals returning again and again, especially for the fish tacos, chicharrons (pork scratchings), churros and, of course, margaritas.

If small dishes will leave you wanting more, but you’re still in the mood for Mexican, then head on over to sister restaurants El Burro Green Point or El Burro Newlands. Their menus are bigger (and so are the dishes) but still come with the distinct genuine Mexican flavour that El Taqueria serves.

El Taqueria is open for lunch and dinner from 12pm until 11:30pm, and doesn’t accept reservations. El Burro Green Point and Newlands are open for lunch and dinner from 12pm until 11:3pm and reservations are accepted. Contact El Burro Green Point on +2721-433-2364 or the El Burro Newlands on +2721-201-1421 to make a booking.

DINNER

Gold Restaurant

If you’re looking for authentic African food, then gem is literally gold. Set in a Safari-style courtyard in Green Point, Gold Restaurant offers different tastes and dishes from the African Continent – from Timbaktu to Table Mountain, and from spicy to mild. Their unique, set menu is made up of 14 dishes that are intended to be shared with everyone at the table. Think: Egyptian lentils, Moroccan couscous, Cape Malay ostrich and lamb samoosas (pastry pockets), East African mango and lime chicken and Zambian kandolo balls (made from sweet potato).

What’s more, each culinary experience comes with a side serving of traditional African entertainment such as a praise singer, dancers and puppet show.

Gold Restaurant is open seven days a week for dinner from 6:30pm to 11pm. Booking is essential; call +2721-421-4653 to reserve a table.

Carne on Kloof

If it’s meaty dishes you’re after, then you’ve certainly come to the right place. Because this Italian Restaurant – housed in a quaint old house with exposed red brick walls, for that true Italian feel – is famous with locals for their steaks: raw meat cuts are presented to you on a platter where the waitor then explains the cut and how the chef will prepare it best. But, don’t make the mistake of overlooking the rest of the menu. Carne’s beef carpaccio, slow-baked ravioli and Karoo lamb also comes highly recommended too.

Carne on Kloof is open Mondays to Saturday for lunch from 12:00pm until 3pm and dinner from 6pm to 10pm (closed Sundays). Booking is essential; call +2721-426-5566 to reserve a table.

ASH Restaurant

If you’re looking for something different, but want to know that your meal will still be finger licking good, then a visit to ASH restaurant is a must. Chef-proprietor Ash Heeger has worked with some of the world’s top experimental chefs including SA’s Luke Dale-Roberts and UK’s Heston Blumenthal. The menu may be small, but it’s packed with bold, smoky flavours. The pig head scrumpets (served with Szechuan-apple sauce) and lamb ribs from the Snackles (tapas) menu are moreish while the slow cooked rolled lamb main course and cheesecake doughnuts dessert will leave you satisfied but wanting more.

You’re also in good hands when it comes to the drinks menu – Ash Restaurant shares a space with celebrated wine cafe Publik Wine Bar; it offers a fine selection of the lesser-known, boutique wineries of South Africa.

ASH Restaurant is open Mondays to Saturday for lunch from 12:00pm until 2:30pm and dinner from 6pm to 10pm (closed Sundays).
The Shortmarket Club

The Shortmarket Club is the third restaurant by one of South Africa’s best-loved chefs, Luke Dale-Roberts. While his first, The Test Kitchen (see further down for more details), is more suited for who wants fine dining and his second, The Pot Luck Club, serves tapas style food, Shortmarket Club finds a delicious, bistro-style middle ground between the two. Try the Parmesan and miso waffle for starters, followed by either the Crispy Pork Cheek with Gorgonzola cream and applesauce or the pan-fried duck breast with smoked figs and liquorice jus. Finish off with the chocolate fondant served with popcorn ice-cream…

The Shortmarket Club is open Mondays to Saturday for lunch from 12:30pm until 2pm and dinner from 7pm to 10pm; it’s also open for breakfast on Fridays and Saturdays from 8am to 10:30am (closed Sundays).
FINE DINING

The Food Barn Restaurant

One of Cape Town’s most-loved and longstanding fine dining restaurants can be found in the tranquil suburb of Noordhoek near Cape Point, and is beautifully housed in an old barn (hence its name). Acclaimed chef Franck Dangereux is renowned with locals for his French-inspired a la carte menu that’s served with a distinct South Africa flavour. Highlights include the Asian steak tartare, Karoo lamb and the squashed Hibicus marshmallow dessert.

The Foodbarn Restaurant is open for lunch seven days a week from 12pm to 2:30pm and open Tuesdays to Saturdays for dinner from 7pm to 9:30pm.
The Test Kitchen

Luke Dale Robert’s The Test Kitchen, situated at the Old Biscuit Mill in Woodstock, has made The World’s 50 Best Restaurant list six times since 2012 and has celebrity fans that include Michelle Obama and Oprah. And while it might be famous the world over, it’s the locals who will book up to three months in advance to sample what is undoubtedly the best cuisine in South Africa.

The restaurant also recently underwent changes and now consists of a Dark Room and a Light Room – each with its own set menu. The vanilla salted peach and rose scented foie gras on the Light Room menu is delectably dreamy, while pork scratchings on the Dark Room menu will leave your taste buds tantalised. The Test Kitchen is also now only open for dinners and only holds a maximum of 40 guests.

The Test Kitchen is open Tuesdays to Saturdays for dinner from 6:30pm to 8:30pm and booking is essential. May and June is currently fully booked, but July, August and September bookings open on 1 June. Click here to reserve a table online.

Foxcroft

This newcomer to Cape Town’s food scene – which opened its doors in October 2016 – won New Restaurant of the Year for 2016 in South Africa’s most acclaimed foodie awards, The Eat Out Awards, in November 2016. And while chefs Scot Kirton and Glen Foxcroft Williams’ restaurant is categorised as fine dining, their setting in the Constantia is warm and welcome; their dishes are a beautiful combination of fine dining meets laid-back. Foxcroft offers delectable tapas plates to order as you please, but their set menus for lunch and dinner are the real winners. Highlights include champagne-poached oysters, yellow tail ceviche and tuna tartare.

The Restaurant at Waterkloof

Situated in the heart of the Somerset West winelands, The Restaurant at Waterkloof not only serves up fine modern French cuisine, but also features breathtakingly beautiful vistas of the Drakenstein mountain range from its glass promontory setting. Chef Gregory Czarnecki’s menu offers a choice of two courses, three courses, or a tasting (degustation) menu that comes with or without wine pairings. While pretty much everything on the menu is heavenly, The Alaskan Crab, free-range Quail and Dulcey Cremeux (pistachio, orange and rice pudding ice cream) stands out.

If you’re opting not to do the wine pairing meals, then make sure you partake in a wine-tasting prior to lunch or dinner to see which offering you’ll enjoy best with your food.

The Restaurant at Waterkloof is open Wednesdays to Saturdays for lunch from 12pm – 2pm and for dinner from 7pm to 9pm (closed Sundays, Mondays and Tuesdays).
